Celebrating Independence

In the United States, we just celebrated our Independence Day. As you know, the Fourth of July celebrates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The Declaration announced the political separation of the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain and our country's independence.

Would you love to have more independence in your life? To me, being independent means to have freedom of choice in all areas of our life. For this to be possible, we must have a certain amount of financial and emotional freedom.

Financial freedom allows us to choose the work we do in the world, the restaurants where we eat, the trips we take, and the causes we give to.

Emotional freedom allows us to say no clearly and easily to the things we don’t want to do, to say yes to the things we do want to do, to not look to others’ opinions for approval, to know that we are enough, and to know that we have always been enough. We can make our decisions from our authentic self and not from past mistakes, blame, or shame we may carry.

We all have limiting beliefs and paradigms that will hinder our ability to create financial and emotional freedom. When we have great success, our limiting beliefs expand; but they are still there.

A paradigm is a collection of thoughts, behaviors, and perceptions that dictate our feelings, actions, and results. Paradigms think their job is to keep us safe. They will do everything they can to keep us from moving forward or step into the unknown. To push past our paradigms, we must become aware of when they are at work, which is almost impossible to do on our own. This is because our paradigms have been running the show for so long and we believe them to be true. We have learned to accept the voices in our head that say, “It’s too risky, what if it doesn’t work out, what will people think, or who do you think you are?”

What does your paradigm say to you when you are considering a change or a bold move? Start to notice, then replace it with an empowering statement.

We can all be free to create the lives we want.
